The Friendly City by the Sea
Perched at the mouth of the White Oak River where it meets the ICW, Swansboro is a beautifully preserved colonial-era waterfront town that sets the tone for everything that follows on the Crystal Coast. Stroll the boardwalk, browse the galleries, and get your first taste of what it means to arrive somewhere by water.
Captain's Note
A beloved first stop for northbound Loopers departing the Crystal Coast. The anchorage off the town dock is well-protected and the holding is good.
The Working Waterfront
Morehead City is the commercial heart of the Crystal Coast — a working waterfront with deep-sea fishing heritage, fresh dockside seafood, and a lively marina scene. It sits directly across from Beaufort on the Newport River, making it easy to visit both towns in a single day. The waterfront restaurants here are some of the best on the entire ICW.
Captain's Note
Morehead City is a major provisioning stop for Loopers. Fuel, groceries, marine supplies — everything you need before heading south or north.
North Carolina's Third-Oldest Town
Beaufort is the jewel of the Crystal Coast — a beautifully preserved colonial waterfront town with a front-row seat to one of the ICW's most spectacular natural features: the wild horses of Carrot Island, visible from the town docks across Taylor's Creek. Anchor out in the creek, dinghy ashore, and spend an afternoon wandering streets lined with 18th-century homes.
Captain's Note
Taylor's Creek anchorage is one of the most iconic stops on the entire East Coast Loop. Arrive early in season — it fills up fast.
The Anchorage of the Crystal Coast
Taylor's Creek is the narrow, protected waterway that runs between downtown Beaufort and Carrot Island — and it's one of the most memorable stretches of water on the entire East Coast ICW. Anchor out in the creek and you'll wake up to wild horses grazing on the island across from you, pelicans gliding past the bow, and the quiet sounds of a town that hasn't changed much in 200 years.
Captain's Note
Taylor's Creek is one of the most iconic anchorages on the entire Great Loop. Arrive early in season — it fills up fast and for good reason.
The Heart of the Working Waterfront
The Morehead City Turning Basin is where the commercial and recreational worlds of the Crystal Coast collide. Container ships, charter fishing boats, and trawlers all share this deep-water basin at the heart of the MHC waterfront. Watching a freighter navigate the turning basin from the deck of a 25-foot trawler is one of those moments that puts the scale of the waterway into perspective.
Captain's Note
The Turning Basin is a key waypoint for Loopers transiting the Crystal Coast — fuel docks, marine services, and provisioning are all within easy reach.
The Sailing Capital of North Carolina
Oriental sits at the confluence of the Neuse River and Smith Creek — a quiet, unhurried river town beloved by Loopers and live-aboards for its authentic character and genuine sense of community. There's no pretense here. Just good people, good water, and the kind of slow pace that makes you wonder why you ever lived any other way.
Captain's Note
Oriental is the turnaround point for TryMyTrawler's 3-Day / 2-Night flagship excursion — and for many guests, the moment they decide to do the Loop.
