Crystal Coast · North Carolina ICW
This isn't for everyone. That's the point. It's not even about the Ranger R27 — it's about The Lifestyle.
If you already own a 50-foot trawler and know the Loop- this experience isn't for you. You're already living the dream.
But if you're standing at the edge of a life-changing decision — seriously considering spending a few hundred thousand dollars on a trawler and the lifestyle that comes with it — then this is exactly what you've been looking for.
Aboard the R27
We cruise aboard a Ranger R27 Tug — a purpose-built pocket trawler. She's smaller than most boats you'll see out on the Loop, and that's the point. She's nimble, efficient, and perfectly suited for the protected ICW waters of North Carolina's Crystal Coast. For Judy and me, the R27 fits our life perfectly. You may decide you want something bigger — and that's exactly the kind of insight this experience is designed to give you.
Trawler life moves at 7–9 knots. You'll feel the rhythm of the waterway — the marsh grass, the pelicans, the small coastal towns sliding past. You'll get hands-on helm time, learn to read the channel markers, and understand what a day underway actually feels like. No rushing. No agenda beyond the water. Though, if you need to get up and go fast — the Yamaha outboard on the Ranger can plane at 13–16 knots and easily cruise at 25+/-. It's all about the gas and throttle control.
I'll tell you what I love about this lifestyle — and what I don't. The costs, the maintenance, the learning curve, the freedom. You'll leave with a real picture of what owning and cruising a trawler looks like, not a glossy brochure version. If it's right for you, you'll know. If it's not, you'll know that too — and you'll have saved yourself a very expensive mistake.
The Ranger R27 Tug
The Ranger R27 is what the trawler community calls a "pocket trawler" — a smaller, purpose-built vessel designed for exactly the kind of coastal cruising we do on the ICW. She's not the 45-foot Grand Banks you might picture when you think "Great Loop." She's leaner, more manageable, and more honest about what the lifestyle actually demands day-to-day.
Out on the Loop, you'll see all sizes — 35-footers, 50-footers, the occasional 65-foot motoryacht. The R27 holds her own. For Judy and me, she's the right boat. For you, this experience might confirm you want something bigger — or it might show you that smaller is smarter. Either way, you'll know.
"Try before you buy" isn't just a tagline. It's the whole point.
Excursions begin August 2026. If you're seriously considering the trawler lifestyle and want to experience it firsthand before making a major financial decision, reach out now. Founding season spots are limited.
